The 'Could Have Beens' of The Woman In The Yard
Today’s the Day
When I first heard about this film, I was excited to add a BIPOC horror movie to my list for the year. The concept intrigued me, so I made sure to avoid spoilers and go into it with an open mind.
However, when I sat down in the theater on opening day, I couldn’t help but sigh at the predictable plot and recycled storyline. Don’t get me wrong, the performances were strong. Danielle Deadwyler, playing the mother Ramona, along with the two children, Peyton Jackson and Estella Kahiha, were all captivating on screen. They kept me engaged. Additionally, the cinematography by Pawel Pogorzelski was absolutely stunning. There were shots that were so mesmerizing I wanted to capture them in a photo.
But the story…
The story had so much potential. The antagonist could’ve been so much more, but unfortunately, the opportunity was wasted. It felt like eating a beautifully crafted cake with no flavor.
